Upstream Biomanufacturing Lab

East Carolina’s Upstream Biomanufacturing Lab (UBL) focuses on the initial stages of bioprocessing, where biological materials (like cells or microorganisms) are cultured and grown to produce bioproducts such as proteins, vaccines, or enzymes. Our lab activities involve processes like cell line development, bioreactor cultivation, and optimization of growth conditions (e.g., temperature, pH, nutrients) to maximize yield. Our labs use equipment like bioreactors, fermenters, and analytical tools to monitor and control the biological production system before the product moves to downstream processing for purification and refinement.

East Carolina’s Upstream Biomanufacturing Lab can be accessed remotely via East Carolina University’s Pharma Pathways Program (PPP). To request remote access to the UBL or to view access instructions, please review the information below.
