Innovation & Outreach

With support from our industry and community college partners, the Eastern Region Pharma Center in ECU’s new Life Sciences and Biotechnology Building provides 21st-century laboratory and manufacturing space with the latest technology, providing students with the education and training they need to land competitive positions in the pharmaceutical industry.

Research

At the heart of the Eastern Region Pharma Center is the new Life Sciences and Biotechnology Building on the campus of East Carolina University. The $90 million, four-story, 141,500-square-foot structure serves as an interdisciplinary research space for faculty and students to explore such topics as biotechnology, biochemical engineering and biophysics, among others.

Hub for Innovation

The Eastern Region Pharma Center provides opportunities to students to learn about and use enabling technologies, such as single-use systems, continuous biomanufacturing and Pharma 4.0, preparing them for the future of industry expansion into these new biomanufacturing practices that are more efficient, consistent and environmentally friendly. We will use virtual reality and augmented reality technology as part of a hybrid-team approach in which students on campus work with those online in the performance of procedures and use of equipment.

Industry Partners

With funding from the Golden LEAF Foundation and East Carolina University, the Eastern Region Pharma Center will work with 15 regional pharmaceutical companies in workforce development. These companies represent some of the largest in the pharmaceutical industry and are investing $3 billion in a five-county region of eastern North Carolina known as the BioPharma Crescent.

Educational Partners

The Eastern Region Pharma Center is a partnership among East Carolina University and five community colleges — Pitt Community College, Johnston Community College, Wilson Community College, Nash Community College and Edgecombe Community College. With experienced faculty who are committed to student success, these institutions offer pathways toward fulfilling, rewarding and high-paying careers in the pharmaceutical industry.
